NVTC Foundation Receives 2003 Northern Virginia Workforce Investment Board Youth Workforce Leadership Award

November 13, 2003 - Herndon, VA - For their notable successes in the creation of three Computer Clubhouses serving 800 children, The Northern Virginia Technology Council Foundation has won the 2003 Northern Virginia Workforce Investment Board Youth Workforce Leadership Award. This award was presented earlier today at the NVWIB Community Workforce Forum at the Reston Hyatt Regency.

The three computer clubhouses located in Gum Springs, Bailey's Crossroads and the Seven Corners areas of Fairfax County have helped teach children necessary skills and create opportunities for them to explore new innovative technologies. Open six days a week from after-school till 8:00 p.m., these clubhouses provide a safe and learning-friendly environment where kids can sharpen the skills they'll need to compete in the 21st Century workforce. Staffed by a Clubhouse Manager and AmeriCorps volunteers, these dedicated members of our community serve as role-models, friends, and educators for these children.

"We are honored to have been selected to receive this award. The NVTC Foundation is very serious about encouraging the next generation of innovators. By investing our time and resources into these children, we are building a brighter future for us all," said Dan Bannister, Chairman of the NVTC Foundation.

The overwhelming success of the Computer Clubhouse project is attributed to the high level of community and corporate involvement, coming from a number of large and small companies from around the region and community activists. The NVTC Foundation partnered with Fairfax County back in 2000 and is today one of the most successful partnerships in our area, and are looking to open three more Computer Clubhouses by September 2004, after receiving a grant from the US Department of Education.

The NVTC Foundation was founded to encourage and facilitate corporate efforts to give something back to the community. The Foundation specifically looks for community initiatives based in Northern Virginia that include technology as an important component in their mission. The NVTC Foundation is a charitable 501(c)(3) organization. Sponsorships are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
