In
less than a decade, the technology industry has become the region's largest
private employer and principal economic driver. In March 2001, the Equal Footing
Foundation was launched as a charitable foundation to support community
outreach initiatives that help improve the lives of Northern Virginians through technology. The NVTC
Foundation was unveiled to more than 700 local technology executives
at the March 2001 "Titans of Technology" breakfast featuring
Mario Morino, chairman of the Morino Institute and chairman of Venture
Philanthropy Partners.
The Equal Footing Foundation, incorporated as a not-for-profit
organization, has set out to expand the reach of current programs that
relate to education and technology workforce issues, and to develop
new technology-related initiatives for the community. It provides a means
for the region's technology community to contribute to and be recognized
for advancing futures in technology, supporting educational opportunities,
and encouraging the pursuit of a better tomorrow through technology.
In February of 2001, the Foundation Board set three short term goals:
- Raise $1,500,000 in cash and pledges.
- Continue to strengthen the Foundation
Board with new members.
- Expand the Foundation's involvement in community
activities
The Foundation is pleased to report
that all three goals are well met as of March 2004. The technology
community has demonstrated its leadership
and commitment to helping make this community an even greater place to
live and work. As we all know, contributions to the Foundation are building
blocks for the future – everyone's future.
The Equal Footing Foundation's future goals:
- Expand the number of Computer Clubhouses
- Expand and increase the Bannister Scholarship Fund.
- Increase the number of Botball teams.
- Increase the number of space camp participants.
